Last year our 2025 commuting guide is our best-performing post. A lot has changed since then: the BLACK Carve 4 and the VELAR 2.0 S arrived, and the old lineup was replaced. So here is the 2026 version, built around one question: what does your commute actually look like?
Short train hop, cobblestones, a long smooth road or a hill at the end? We match every current ONSRA board to a type of commute, with real specs from our product pages and euro prices from onsra.eu. Looking further ahead? Read what to ride into 2027 (coming soon).
Read this first: where can you legally ride in Europe?
Short answer: in most European countries an electric skateboard is not a legal road vehicle. In Germany it is not allowed on public roads (no handlebar, so no operating permit under the eKFV, the German e-micro-vehicle rules). In Switzerland and the UK it is private grounds only. Commute only where your local rules allow it, and carry the board for the rest.
| Country | Public roads | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | Not allowed on public roads | eKFV § 1 (gesetze-im-internet.de) |
| Switzerland | Private grounds only | ASTRA |
| Austria | No explicit rule: grey zone, no clear permission | ÖAMTC |
| Netherlands | Not allowed on public roads | Rijksoverheid.nl |
| France | Only inside strict speed/power limits that the listed specs of ONSRA boards exceed | service-public.gouv.fr (EDPM ≤ 25 km/h) |
| Spain | Only inside strict speed/power limits that the listed specs of ONSRA boards exceed | DGT (VMP ≤ 25 km/h) |
| Italy | No explicit rule: grey zone, no clear permission | MIT / Ministero dell’Interno |
| Poland | Only inside strict speed/power limits that the listed specs of ONSRA boards exceed | Ministerstwo Infrastruktury (UTO ≤ 20 km/h) |
| Czech Republic | No explicit rule: grey zone, no clear permission | Ministerstvo dopravy / CDV |
| Sweden | Only inside strict speed/power limits that the listed specs of ONSRA boards exceed | Transportstyrelsen (≤ 20 km/h, ≤ 250 W) |
| United Kingdom | Private grounds only | GOV.UK (DfT) |
Status October 2026, summarised from the official sources named in the table. Rules change, so check your national and local rules before you ride. The top speeds listed on our product pages (for example 62 km/h for the VELAR 2.0 S) are far above the limits that apply to e-scooters and other light electric vehicles.

Train + last mile: ONSRA ZENO

ONSRA ZENO
from €990
Our smallest board: a light fiberglass and wood kicktail deck with stealthy hub motors and a 14S battery system. Pick the 99 Wh flight-safe battery or the 259 Wh extended version. It is the board you carry most, ride least.
- Battery: 14S · 99 Wh / 259 Wh
- Drive: Hub motors
Where the ZENO shines is everything around the ride: you can pick it up with one hand, slide it under a desk or a train seat, and swap the battery instead of waiting for a charge. Hub motors also mean no belts or gears sticking out, so there is less to catch on bags and trouser legs. The trade-off is clear: it is a short-distance board, so keep it for the first and last kilometre.

Short city hops with stairs: ONSRA Challenger 2.0 Street

ONSRA Challenger 2.0 Street
from €1,390
A compact kicktail board at 9.9 kg with 100 mm Tarmax wheels. Easy to pick up on stairs and at the door, with up to 38 km range on the product page.
- Battery: 12S2P · 432 Wh
- Range: 38 km
- Top speed: 48 km/h
- Weight: 9.9 kg
- Drive: Belt drive
- Water resistance: IP65
The Street version is the one to choose if your route is mostly smooth asphalt and you care about weight. Urethane wheels roll quietly and efficiently, and the kicktail lets you pop the nose up a curb or turn sharply in a tight hallway. On rough surfaces, though, small wheels transmit every crack, so look at the All Terrain if your city has a lot of cobbles.

Mixed surfaces and cobbles: ONSRA Challenger 2.0 All Terrain

ONSRA Challenger 2.0 All Terrain
from €1,530
The same compact kicktail platform with 150 mm pneumatic tires that soak up cobbles and broken tarmac. 10.1 kg, 24 km on AT wheels or 38 km on street wheels.
- Battery: 12S2P · 432 Wh
- Range: 24 km (AT) / 38 km (street)
- Top speed: 45 km/h
- Weight: 10.1 kg
- Drive: Belt drive
- Water resistance: IP65
Pneumatic tires are the most comfortable upgrade a small board can get: they absorb vibration, grip better on wet leaves and gravel, and make cobbled old towns far less tiring. The price is range, which drops from 38 km on street wheels to 24 km on AT wheels according to the product page, so plan your charging if your ride is longer.

Longer smooth-road rides: ONSRA BLACK Carve 4 Street

ONSRA BLACK Carve 4 Street
from €1,890
Our newest electric longboard: premium bamboo deck with real flex, an all-new gear drive and a 14S battery. Quiet, low-maintenance and made for long carving rides.
- Battery: 14S
- Drive: Gear drive
A longboard with a flexible bamboo deck rides differently from a stiff short board: the flex filters out small bumps and lets you carve in long, relaxed turns. Gear drive keeps the drivetrain enclosed, which matters on a daily board because there is no belt to replace and less noise in quiet streets. This is the board for riders who enjoy the ride itself.

Rough roads and hills: ONSRA BLACK Carve 4 AT

ONSRA BLACK Carve 4 AT
from €1,990
The BLACK Carve 4 on all-terrain tires. Same bamboo deck, gear drive and 14S power, with the grip for rough roads and steep climbs.
- Battery: 14S
- Drive: Gear drive
All-terrain tires turn the same board into a better climber and a calmer ride on broken asphalt, park paths and gravel. The 14S battery helps on steep sections, where lower-voltage boards start to struggle. If your route has a hill at the end, or roads that never get repaired, the AT is the safer choice.

Long range and heavy riders: ONSRA VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive

ONSRA VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive
from €2,790
A carbon deck, CNC channel trucks and a 14S4P 1036 Wh battery. 60 km range on 200 mm AT wheels and a 220 kg max load: the board for long distances and heavy riders.
- Battery: 14S4P · 1036 Wh
- Range: 60 km
- Top speed: 65 km/h
- Weight: 18.4 kg
- Drive: Gear drive
- Water resistance: IP65
The VELAR is built for distance. With 60 km of listed range, many riders can do several round trips between charges, and the 220 kg maximum load gives a lot of headroom for heavier riders or a full backpack. The trade-off is weight: at 18.4 kg it is not a board you want to carry up five floors every day.

Maximum comfort on bad surfaces: ONSRA VELAR 2.0 S

ONSRA VELAR 2.0 S
from €3,090
The VELAR with suspension trucks: the same 1036 Wh battery and 60 km range, with suspension for comfort when the surface gets bad. Our most capable board.
- Battery: 14S4P · 1036 Wh
- Range: 60 km
- Top speed: 62 km/h
- Weight: 18.4 kg
- Drive: Gear drive
- Water resistance: IP65
Suspension trucks make the biggest difference where other boards become tiring: patched asphalt, tram tracks, root-damaged paths and long stretches of rough surface. You arrive less shaken, and the board stays more planted at speed. It shares the 1036 Wh battery and IP65 rating with the VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive, so the choice between the two is about comfort versus a lighter, simpler setup.

Commuter checklist
- Check the law first (table above). Where riding is not allowed, carry the board.
- Helmet and lights. Wear a helmet every ride and be visible in the dark.
- Range with a buffer. Choose a board whose listed range is well above your round trip; cold weather, hills and rider weight reduce range.
- Weight you can carry. If you carry the board often, the ZENO or a Challenger 2.0 (around 10 kg) is much easier than a VELAR (18.4 kg).
- Charging. The VELAR lists 4–5 hours with the 4.5 A charger; the Challenger about 4 hours.
How to choose: distance, terrain and carrying
Distance. Measure your real route, not the straight line, and double it for the round trip. Then choose a board whose listed range is comfortably above that number. Listed ranges are measured under good conditions; cold temperatures, headwind, hills, heavy loads and frequent stops all reduce what you get in daily use. A 10 km round trip is easy for every ONSRA board; a 30 km round trip points to a BLACK Carve 4 or a VELAR.
Terrain. Smooth asphalt favours efficient street wheels. Cobbles, cracks, gravel and wet leaves favour pneumatic tires, and the worst surfaces favour suspension. If you are unsure, ride your route on foot or by bike and count how much of it is rough: if it is more than a few hundred metres, choose an AT version.
Carrying. Every commute includes moments when you carry the board: stairs, shops, offices, trains and everywhere riding is not allowed. Be honest about how often that happens. Under about 10 kg (ZENO, Challenger 2.0) a board is easy to carry for a while; at 18.4 kg (VELAR) you will want to roll it or carry it only for short distances.
Weather, charging and maintenance
Weather. The VELAR and Challenger list IP65, with an enclosure sealed by an O-ring. That protects against splashes, but it is not an invitation to ride through deep puddles; wet roads also mean longer braking distances and slippery paint markings. Dry the board after a wet ride and store it indoors.
Charging. The VELAR lists 4–5 hours with its 4.5 A charger and the Challenger about 4 hours with its 2.5 A charger. If you can charge at work, a smaller battery can cover a longer commute. If you cannot, size the battery for the full round trip plus a buffer.
Maintenance. Gear drive (BLACK Carve 4, VELAR) and hub motors (ZENO) need little routine care. Belt drive (Challenger 2.0) is simple and easy to service, but belts wear and should be checked. On every board, check tire pressure on pneumatic wheels, keep bolts tight and look at the bushings now and then; ONSRA lists spare parts and batteries on its store.
Safety: ride within your limits
Electric skateboards accelerate and brake through the remote, so practise in a safe, legal place until braking feels automatic. Start with the lowest acceleration and braking settings; the VELAR lets you adjust both from 10 to 100 percent. Wear a helmet every time, add wrist guards and gloves, and use lights and reflective clothing in the dark.
Speed is the biggest risk factor. Our boards can go much faster than you need on a commute, so choose a sensible speed for the surface, the visibility and the people around you, and always follow the local rules from the table above.

FAQ: commuting on an electric skateboard in Europe
What is the best electric skateboard for commuting in Europe in 2026?
It depends on your commute. For train and last-mile trips, the ZENO. For short city rides, the Challenger 2.0 Street; on cobbles, the Challenger 2.0 All Terrain. For long smooth rides, the BLACK Carve 4 Street; for rough roads, the BLACK Carve 4 AT. For long range, the VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive, and for maximum comfort, the VELAR 2.0 S.
Can I commute on an electric skateboard in Germany?
No. In Germany electric skateboards are not allowed on public roads. They have no handlebar, so they cannot get an operating permit under the eKFV, and without it there is no insurance plate. Ride on private grounds with permission only.
Can I take an electric skateboard on the train?
That depends on the rail operator, so check its rules before you travel. A light board like the ZENO or a Challenger 2.0 (about 10 kg) is far easier to carry on board.
How much range do I need for my commute?
Take your round trip and add a good buffer, because cold, hills and rider weight reduce range. The Challenger 2.0 Street lists 38 km and the VELAR boards 60 km on their product pages.
Belt drive, gear drive or hub motors?
The BLACK Carve 4 and VELAR use gear drive (quiet, sealed, low maintenance), the Challenger 2.0 uses belt drive, and the ZENO uses hub motors for a clean, compact build.
