This is a forward-looking guide: what to ride into 2027. We will not guess at boards that do not exist. Everything below is either on sale on onsra.eu today or officially announced, and where we do not know something (like a price or a date), we say so.

Rules heading into 2027

  • Germany: electric skateboards remain not allowed on public roads. We found no current plan to change this; a 2019 Bundesrat attempt to allow vehicles without handlebars was rejected.
  • Switzerland and the UK: private grounds only, according to ASTRA and GOV.UK.
  • Spain: the DGT launched a registry for light personal vehicles in January 2026, with a transition period until 22 January 2027. Boards faster than 25 km/h are not VMPs under the DGT instruction.
  • Poland: e-skateboards fall under the UTO category (max 20 km/h by design); since 3 June 2026 riders under 16 must wear a helmet, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
  • Elsewhere: grey zones (Austria, Italy, Czech Republic) give no clear permission. Check the official sources before every new season.

Five things that will matter for riders in 2027

1. Gear drive becomes the standard

Quiet, sealed and almost maintenance-free. The BLACK Carve 4 brings gear drive to our bamboo longboard; the VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive and VELAR 2.0 S use it too.

For a commuter, the practical difference is less noise, no belt to replace and a drivetrain that stays clean in bad weather. Gear drives also deliver torque directly, which helps on hills and when you pull away. If you want one board for several years of daily use, this is the feature we would prioritise.

2. Suspension and big tires

Rough surfaces are where comfort matters most. The VELAR 2.0 S adds suspension trucks to 200 mm tires; the VELAR 2.0 Gear Drive keeps the classic setup.

Big pneumatic tires already make a huge difference on their own. Suspension adds a second layer of comfort for riders whose routes include long rough sections or who simply want to arrive less tired. Both VELARs share the same carbon deck and 1036 Wh battery, so you can choose based on comfort alone.

3. Batteries you can travel with

A swappable 99 Wh battery on the ZENO is designed with flights in mind, and the 259 Wh version adds range on the ground.

Battery size will matter more as more people combine boards with trains, buses and flights. A small, swappable battery lets you carry a spare instead of a charger, and a travel-safe size keeps your options open. Always check the current rules of your airline or transport operator before you travel.

4. Small, light kicktail boards

Around 10 kg, a kicktail for curbs and stairs, and an easy carry: that is the Challenger 2.0, in Street and All Terrain versions.

Light boards are the easiest to live with: you carry them without thinking, store them anywhere and take them along when plans change. Not every commute needs 60 km of range; for many riders a light kicktail board with a realistic range is the more useful daily tool.

5. Push assist (announced: Sino)

We will update this guide when ONSRA publishes official details about the Sino. Until then, treat any specs or dates you see elsewhere with caution: the only confirmed facts are the name, push assist and the "coming soon" status.

ONSRA Sino · coming soon, no price or date yet

ONSRA has announced the Sino with push assist. It is marked coming soon: there is no price, no release date and no product page yet, so we cannot share specs. Important: push assist does not make a board legal on public roads, for example in Germany.

How to future-proof your next board

Buy for your real route. The most future-proof board is the one you will actually ride. Match the range to your round trip with a buffer, the tires to your surfaces and the weight to how often you carry it. A board that is too heavy or too short-ranged will stay in the corner, whatever its specs.

Prefer enclosed drivetrains and sealed electronics. Gear drive and hub motors reduce routine maintenance, and an enclosure sealed with an O-ring (IP65 on the VELAR and Challenger) protects the electronics from splashes. That matters more the more days per year you ride.

Think about parts and service. Tires, inner tubes, belts and batteries are wear parts. Before you buy, check that they are available; ONSRA lists spare parts and batteries on its stores. A board you can repair keeps its value longer.

Keep an eye on the rules. Laws for light electric vehicles are changing in several countries. A feature such as push assist does not change the legal status of a board. Check official sources once a year, and before you ride in a new country.

Battery care for a longer life

Lithium-ion batteries last longer when you avoid extremes: do not store the board fully empty or in a hot car, and bring it to room temperature before charging after a cold ride. If you will not ride for weeks, store it partly charged in a dry place. Use the charger that came with the board.

Who should wait, and who should buy now

If your commute already works with a light board or a long-range board, waiting for an unannounced feature costs you a season of riding. Push assist is mainly interesting for riders who want help when starting off or pushing, for example on longer flat stretches. If that is you, follow the Sino announcement, but do not plan around a date that does not exist yet.

If you need a board for daily use now, choose from the current lineup on the basis of your route: the 2026 guide matches each board to a type of commute. A good board bought today will still be a good board in 2027.
